He served as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Bournemouth East from 2005 to 2024, a tenure marked by his strong advocacy for national defence and security. His deep commitment to the field was evident during his time as Chair of the Defence Select Committee from 2020 to 2023, where he led critical discussions and initiatives to bolster the United Kingdom’s defence capabilities.

In addition to his role as an MP, Ellwood held the position of Minister for Defence Veterans, Reserves and Personnel at the Ministry of Defence from 2017 to 2019.
