A New Era for RAF Scampton After Government Scraps Asylum Plans

The recent government decision to halt plans for housing asylum seekers at RAF Scampton has opened the door for an exciting new chapter in the site's future.

The former Ministry of Defence base, which was originally earmarked for a large asylum accommodation site, will now focus on its true potential: a £300 million regeneration plan to transform the area into a hub for the defence, air, and space sectors.

Peter Hewitt, Chairman of Scampton Holdings Limited (SHL) and Co-Chair of Universal Defence and Security Solutions, sees this as a pivotal moment for the local community and the wider region. Commenting on the decision, he stated:

"We must now put this period behind us, roll up our sleeves, and work together to unlock the true potential of Scampton for generations to come."

Peter Hewitt’s leadership at Scampton Holdings has been instrumental in driving the long-term vision for the site. With the decision to shelve asylum accommodation plans, attention can now turn to finalising contracts with West Lindsey District Council and shifting the focus to creating a world-class facility in Lincolnshire.

The collaboration between SHL, local authorities, and investors aims to turn RAF Scampton into a global centre for innovation in defence, air, and space. This vision, in Peter Hewitt’s words, is about making Scampton a key player in these industries, leveraging its unique location and heritage to create jobs, skills, and long-term prosperity.

A Community-Focused Regeneration

West Lindsey District Council, alongside Peter Hewitt’s team, is committed to ensuring that this regeneration honours the historic legacy of RAF Scampton, home to the famous Dambusters squadron. As part of this, Hewitt emphasises working closely with investors and local residents to ensure the development benefits not just the industry but also the surrounding community.

With work already progressing to conclude contracting arrangements and clear the site of previous works, the future of Scampton looks set for a remarkable transformation. This historic site is poised to contribute to the growing defence and aerospace sectors, creating a brighter future for both Lincolnshire and the UK.
