UDSS supports VE Day 2025 and the Legacy of Lancaster ND861

Universal Defence and Security Solutions (UDSS) is proud to support Hull’s VE Day 80 celebrations, which honour the crew of 103 Squadron bomber Avro Lancaster ND861 - a poignant symbol of the courage, sacrifice, and resilience of WWII. This historic bomber tragically crashed into the Humber Estuary on January 4, 1945, just 16 minutes into a training flight, taking the lives of six young airmen.

Preserving History Through a National Memorial

To commemorate these heroes, a national competition led by the International Bomber Command Centre invites UK citizens to design a memorial marking the final resting place of ND861. This tribute ensures their story, and the ultimate sacrifice they made, will never be forgotten.

“The memorial is a reminder of the unity and values these men fought to protect,” said UDSS Chairman Peter Hewitt. “It’s a testament to their final mission and a reflection of the shared sacrifices of their generation.”

UDSS is working closely with Scampton Holdings Ltd, the company appointed by West Lindsey District Council to develop one of Britain’s most iconic RAF heritage sites, the former RAF base Scampton.

“UDSS understands the profound importance of preserving the stories of those who served and sacrificed in conflict for our freedom,” continued Mr Hewitt. “The story of Lancaster ND861 and its crew embodies the courage and resilience of a generation. Supporting this initiative is not only a privilege but a commitment to ensuring their legacy endures.”

The memorial will honour not only the six brave crew members, “but also the shared legacy of courage and unity that VE Day represents,” according to Nicky van der Drift OBE, CEO of the International Bomber Command Centre.

“These young men epitomise the sacrifices made for the freedoms we enjoy today,” emphasised Dereck Hardman, CEO of the Armed Forces & Veterans’ Breakfast Clubs.

UDSS will be in attendance at the intimate ceremony, which will host some 50 Veterans and an official bugle player.

Join the Nation in Celebrating VE Day 80

May 8 2025 marks the 80th anniversary of VE Day, a global celebration of peace, reconciliation, and the enduring spirit of unity. From street parties to Beacons of Peace lighting the night sky, this year’s commemorations aim to be the largest since Winston Churchill announced victory in Europe.

“This may be our final opportunity to thank, in person, the generation that fought for our freedom,” said Pageantmaster Bruno Peek CVO OBE OPR. “Let’s make it a heartfelt tribute to their sacrifices and the values they fought to protect.”
