UDSS Attends the Launch of Great British Commanders by Professor Michael Clarke

Universal Defence and Security Solutions (UDSS) was proud to be represented at the recent launch of Professor Michael Clarke’s latest book, "Great British Commanders: Leadership, Strategy and Luck", held at the Royal United Services Institute (RUSI) headquarters.

Vice Admiral (Ret’d) Duncan L Potts CB, UDSS Director, and Anton Gash from UDSS’ Professional Military Education Division attended the event, which brought together military professionals, historians, and enthusiasts to celebrate the stories of Britain’s historic commanders.

Professor Clarke captivated the audience with his vivid storytelling, recounting tales of leaders who shaped British history. His book delves into the lives of 34 commanders, spanning almost two millennia—from Queen Boudica’s rebellion in Roman Britain to the strategists of the World Wars. This collection of biographical essays offers a unique lens into the personal and professional lives of these figures, examining their leadership styles, strategies, and their encounters with fortune—or misfortune.

Among the commanders featured are iconic figures like King Alfred, William the Conqueror, Henry V, Cromwell, and Montgomery, as well as lesser-known yet significant leaders like Lady Aethelflaed of Mercia and Sir William Marshal. Through these stories, Professor Clarke explores the complexities of command, highlighting the human dimension of military leadership: their triumphs, flaws, and the sheer unpredictability of warfare.

During the event’s Q&A session, UDSS member Anton Gash posed a thought-provoking question about the roles of nature and nurture in shaping great commanders. Professor Clarke reflected on his research, explaining that while commanders can be nurtured through experience and training, truly great commanders possess something intangible that sets them apart. He emphasised their ability to make incisive decisions, inspire belief in their vision, and excel in planning and staff work—qualities that transcend time and remain essential in modern military leadership.

The evening was not just a celebration of a new book but also an opportunity for meaningful discussions about the enduring principles of command and the evolving challenges of 21st-century warfare. UDSS remains committed to engaging with thought leaders and fostering dialogue on the critical aspects of military education and leadership.
