Universal Defence and Security Solutions (UDSS) is proud to announce that our Co-Chair, General Sir Richard Barrons KCB CBE, will be joining the renowned think tank Chatham House as a senior consulting fellow within the International Security Programme.
Sir Richard will formally take up the role in September 2025, bringing his unrivalled experience in strategic defence and national security to one of the world’s most respected international affairs institutions.
From 2013 to 2016, Sir Richard served as Commander Joint Forces Command (now Strategic Command), leading over 20,000 personnel and sitting as one of the six Chiefs of Staff guiding the UK Armed Forces. His distinguished career spans from the final decade of the Cold War to operational command in Bosnia, Kosovo, Northern Ireland, Iraq and Afghanistan, through to shaping digital-age military transformation for the 21st century.
Most recently, he was appointed by the UK Prime Minister as a key leader of the Strategic Defence Review (SDR) 2025, a landmark report published in June which redefined how the UK prepares for, funds and delivers national defence. Download a copy of the SDR below:
In his ongoing role as Co-Chair of UDSS, Sir Richard continues to lead a world-class team of senior commanders, former officials, diplomats and industry specialists advising governments and global organisations on security, resilience, and geopolitics.
Speaking on the appointment, Chatham House Director Bronwen Maddox said:
“I’m delighted General Sir Richard Barrons is joining the Chatham House team to give his perspective on security in an insecure and uncertain world.”
At UDSS, we warmly congratulate Sir Richard on this new appointment. His insights and leadership have been pivotal to our mission and this recognition further cements his reputation as one of the most respected strategic voices in global defence.
