Championing Veterans and Strategic Leadership at Universal Defence and Security Solutions (UDSS)

Peter Hewitt, Co-Chairman and Co-Founder of Universal Defence and Security Solutions (UDSS), is a prominent business leader whose career exemplifies resilience, entrepreneurship, and a deep commitment to supporting veterans transitioning to civilian life. Alongside his co-founder, General Sir Richard Barrons KCB CBE, Hewitt has built UDSS into a unique organisation that bridges the military and civilian worlds, offering veterans invaluable opportunities for career growth and connection.

A Strategic Entrepreneurial Journey

Hewitt’s professional journey began in property sales and management, where he launched his first business at 24 years old. This early foray into entrepreneurship set the stage for a long and diverse career spanning various industries. Over the years, he has navigated public company leadership and successfully grew businesses through strategic planning and operational expertise.

One notable chapter in Hewitt’s career involved a dramatic hostile takeover attempt of a quoted public company, a trial that tested his resilience and strategic acumen. This formative experience sharpened his understanding of corporate governance and high-stakes decision-making, lessons that now inform his leadership at UDSS. Under Hewitt’s guidance, UDSS has fostered a culture of accountability, camaraderie, and innovation, hallmarks of his entrepreneurial style.

Empowering Veterans Through UDSS

UDSS was born from Hewitt’s partnership with General Sir Richard Barrons and their shared vision of supporting military personnel in their transition to civilian careers. Hewitt recognised the stark contrast between the camaraderie of military life and the often isolating world of business. His goal with UDSS is to provide veterans with both the structure and support they need to succeed in new roles.

At UDSS, veterans are offered opportunities to explore consulting roles, entrepreneurial ventures, and other professional paths under the mentorship of experienced leaders. Hewitt describes UDSS as a unique "umbrella" organisation—a space where veterans can find not just employment, but also a sense of purpose and belonging in their post-service lives.

Revitalising RAF Scampton and Community Growth

In addition to his work with UDSS, Hewitt serves as Chairman of Scampton Holdings Limited, which won the public procurement to redevelop the historic RAF Scampton airbase. This project reflects Hewitt’s commitment to honouring the military’s legacy while fostering community and economic growth.

The redevelopment aims to transform RAF Scampton into a vibrant hub for the aerospace and defence industries, creating opportunities for veterans and civilians alike. While government delays have slowed progress, Hewitt remains optimistic about securing the site within the next nine months. His vision is to create a space that preserves Scampton’s rich history while driving future innovation.

A Unique Perspective on Defence

Despite his civilian background, Hewitt holds the honorary title of Group Captain in the Royal Auxiliary Air Force’s 601 Squadron. This role allows him to bring a business lens to military decision-making, contributing to the command board at RAF Brize Norton. Hewitt is particularly focused on improving resource allocation, infrastructure management, and addressing inefficiencies in military budgeting—key challenges that affect operational readiness.

Advocating for Innovation in Defence Technology

Hewitt is deeply invested in defence modernisation, particularly the role of emerging technologies in reshaping the defence landscape. His leadership at UDSS emphasises equipping military personnel with the best tools and resources, ensuring that those on the front lines are fully prepared for the challenges of modern warfare.

A Legacy of Leadership and Service

Peter Hewitt’s career is a testament to resilience, strategic thinking, and a dedication to bridging the gap between the military and civilian worlds. Through UDSS and his other ventures, he has created opportunities that empower veterans, strengthen communities, and modernise the defence sector. His unwavering commitment to service ensures that veterans are not only supported but celebrated in their transition to civilian life.
