601 Squadron presented with new Standard

UDSS Co-chairman, Honorary Group Captain Peter Hewitt formed part of the RAF’s Queen's Colour Squadron team in the presentation and dedication of the new 601 Squadron Standard.

Chief of the Air Staff Air Chief Marshal Sir Mike Wigston was the presiding officer for the ceremony. 601 Squadron has a long and distinguished history and the Battle Honours on the Standard presented in the ceremony reflect that history.

During the Second World War, Squadron members were drawn from all walks of life, backgrounds and from many Commonwealth and other countries.  The Squadron was diverse even in the 1940s and this ethos remains a cornerstone today with Squadron members being drawn from a wide range of backgrounds, ethnicities and experiences.

601 Squadron’s current role and outputs are defined by the 3 As – Advice, Access and Advocacy. The Squadron act as advocates for the RAF and air and space power and act as Critical Friends to those in the RAF. 601 Squadron provides the RAF with unique insights and access to external advice and expertise to help the RAF. These individuals bring innovative ideas and experience from their networks to provide the RAF with a competitive edge.  The depth and variety of experience offered by members of 601 Squadron to the SLT enrich discussion and debate. 

Peter in his capacity as an Honorary Group Captain in 601 (County of London) Sqn, RAuxAF also welcomed the incoming Station Commander at RAF Brize Norton, Group Captain Claire O’Grady.
