On Thursday 27 June 2024, UDSS director Vice Admiral (Retd) Duncan L Potts CB attended the dedication of the new Royal Naval Association (RNA) Memorial at The Living Memorial at White House Farm, Rettendon in Essex.
This poignant event marked a significant moment of remembrance and honour for UK Naval veterans and their families, further solidifying the bond within the naval community and reflecting the enduring spirit of camaraderie.
A moving dedication
The dedication ceremony, hosted by the RNA Rayleigh branch, was a culmination of efforts envisioned by its late Chairman Jim Hammond. The event featured the unveiling of a new building onsite - the Jim Hammond ‘Cabin’ - which symbolises Mr Hammond’s vision and tireless dedication to the RNA and HM Royal Navy.
Over 100 guests attended the memorial dedication, including notable figures such as Vice Admiral John McAnally CB LVO, RNA CEO Captain Bill Oliphant, Lieutenant Commander Rebecca Reavell, and 20 Standard Bearers led by RNA National Standard Bearer Steve Champion.
Reverend Glen Mansfield of Trinity Church in Rayleigh conducted the service, delivering a heartfelt sermon for the memorial’s dedication. Afterwards, attendees gathered in a marquee for a traditional ploughman's lunch, reflecting the fellowship of the RNA members and supporters.
Reflecting on the event, Vice Admiral Potts remarked, “As National President, it was a great pleasure to represent the Royal Naval Association at the dedication of the RNA Memorial and The Jim Hammond ‘Cabin’. Fittingly, it was tied in with Armed Forces weekend, and I was honoured to lay the wreath to remember our veterans - the event was strongly supported by veterans from all three Services.”
